From Oklahoma to Eternity: The Life of Wiley Post and the Winnie Mae (Oklahoma Trackmaker Series)
Published in Hardcover by Oklahoma Heritage Association (01 February, 1998)
Authors: Kenny Arthur Franks, Gini Moore Campbell, and Bob Burke
Average review score:

The Post family applaudes Bob Burke
What can be said about the most factual biography written about Wiley Post. Kudos to Bob for telling the story of Wiley Post with the utmost accuracy and authenticity. His work brings to the reader a factual and conceise history of one of the worlds greatest avaitors. Once you start you want to read it from cover to cover. For avaition buffs this is a must read. Not only does it give a great deal of insight to the mentality of a fearless flyer, but provides the reader a look at an uneducated man who by dogged detrmination and force of will, circumnavigated the globe and designed the prototype of the modern space suite.

Outstanding for many reasons. Perfrectly researched.
Bob Burke as set an example for writers and researchers that will be hard to match in his wonderful work on Wiley Post. Aviation buffs, Oklahomans and anyone who appreciates a good book that is hard to put down will appreciate "From Oklahoma to Eternity: The Life of Wiley Post and The Winnie Mae". In addition to his excellent journalistic skills, Burke proves himself to be a superb researcher with a desire to mix truth, fact and adventure with a great story about a great man. I have added this book to my personal list of all time favorites and will look forward to more works by Bob Burke. It is so very refreshing to read history (I am a historian) written honestly without loads of mistakes and sloppy research. Keep that word processor fired up Mr. Burke!

Frontlines: Snapshots of History
Published in Hardcover by Financial Times Prentice Hall (18 June, 2001)

The men on the spot
This must be the ultimate in fly on the wall literature. This well illustated book recounts in excellent journalistic style how reuter's correspondents visited hotspots and met hotshots over the last sixty years. The composition of the book gives the reader the feeling of "being there" and you can relive the tension of many of the situations and empathise with the man on the spot who had to contend with such traumas as hearing someone being clubbed to death outside his prison cell in an unstable African state.
Also the charismatic atmosphere surrounding some of the big names that the reporters met comes through the text to the reader, from Elvis Presley to Margaret Thatcher and many more, the great and the not so good are there.
One surprise was to discover that Derek Jameson began his career by landing a job as a messenger boy at Reuters and subsequently impressed his superior so much that he was made a trainee reporter, which eventually launched him on his future path as a journalist and broadcaster.
Having finished reading this excellent work I would commend the reader to place it on the bookshelf with other historical works for future generations to refer to.

Reuters Foreign Correspondents Tell How They Got the Story
Frontlines will appear to many to be a book of photography, and the book certain does contain several dozen fine images of world-significant events since 1944. However, the bulk of this intriguing volume tells the story behind the story by 40 on-the-scenes correspondents for Reuters who broke the news. In most cases, these essays will provide new details to you that will put much of recent history into a different perspective.

"Where the action is, Reuters is always there . . . ." You will be impressed by the derring-do of the correspondents here. For example, Doon Campbell was born with one arm. Despite that, he came in on an LST with the first wave of Royal Marines on D-Day, and crossed the Rhine with the first gliders (being considered unable to parachute by the authorities).

Although the book covers a tremendous number of world-shaking events (D-Day, the bombing of Hiroshima, the first landings over the Rhine, the Six Day War, building and tearing down of the Berlin Wall, the Iranian Revolution, OPEC's price increases and the Arab Oil Embargo, and space feats), it also covers many many areas of mass culture (Elvis in Germany, over the hill celebrities in Hollywood, and the Thrilla in Manila).

To me, the most interesting essays were the ones that covered getting the story in Communist countries. Usually, the local laws had to be broken to get the story, broken again to get the story out, and then the correspondent had to deal with the angry officials afterwards. You will be moved by the many times that these reporters faced long-term sentences in prison or even execution for covering important stories. One of the most interesting stories is by thriller writer Frederick Forsyth who recalls getting a story about an American bomber shot down in East Germany after World War II. His tale of getting the story and getting out seems just like one of his novels, and you will read those novels differently in the future realizing that he has been there and done that.

The book also has a lot of humor, such as the description of the failed American test of a "space loo" which was wired the wrong way and ejected the material involved instead of sucking it in. One of the funniest was the story of accidentally stepping on Chairman Mao's toes.

If you are a news junkie, journalist, or just someone who likes to know the behind-the-scenes detail, this book will be a favorite in your library for many years to come.

After you finish enjoying the book, I suggest that you take events that most interest you and find the latest books on them. In that way, you can combine perspectives to get a better flavor of what interests you.

Look carefully to see the art and courage behind the bare bones design!

Gender, Law, and Resistance in India
Published in Paperback by University of Arizona Press (January, 2002)

excellent first hand account of women's lives in India
This is a wonderful, moving academic book. It dispels the myth of monolithic patriarchy in Indian society by showing how women attempt to master their own fates. The author has done the best job in recent years of getting inside the life of a village in India, and we are given vivid descriptions of how women battle male attempts to control them. As a college teacher I plan to use it in courses dealing with women's issues and in cultural studies of India. I recommend it as a reading in intermediate and upper level undergraduate courses on India and on women.

The best recent study of gender and patriarchy in India
This is an excellent, in-depth portrait of the life of women in India, and in particular how women exert influence in a strongly patriarchal society. As a college teacher I am planning to use it regularly both in teaching about India and about women in traditional societies. It might also be useful alongside a text in an introductory course in social anthropology or women's studies.

Gentlemen Never Sail to Weather: A Story of an Accidental Odyssey

Gentlemen Never Sail to Weather
This is an excellent story; very well told. Mr. Moore and his wife get it "thrown in their faces" repeatedly and keep coming back for more. Despite circumstances which would have most of us grinding our molars and pulling out fistfulls of hair, Denny tends toward the bright side: Something as essential to any circumnavigator as his/her sextant (GPS),compass or stash of grog. Going "all the way around" is a hell of a big deal. I've read half a dozen books by warriors who've done it, and this is certainly one of the best. An enjoyable read by a likeable guy.

The story of a brave couple
.

This book is indeed, and accidental Odyssey. Denny Moore and his wife decided to break away and do something exciting--buy a boat and cruise. They never planned to sail around the world--what started as a Caribbean cruise turned into a round the world voyage--downwide most of the way.

Denny and his wife Velda made every possible mistake on this trip, but triumphed in achieving what few people have the guts to do. We can learn by the mistakes the made and also by their bravery and courage.

I really enjoyed this book and have read it twice and even traded some email with Denny. I'm pleased to have known him in this way. Thanks Denny for a great book.

This book would be a great gift idea for a nautical man. It has some meat to it. 456 pages. Nice illustrations and photos.

Here is an excerpt to get your interest.

"Perhaps foolishly but understandably, considering how long we had been at sea and how badly we needed to see land and to replenish our stores, I was carrying the full twelve hundred feet of sail in our fore-and-aft rig, trying to keep moving against a northwest breeze and a stiff little chop that was developing.

The boat hit a wave, bigger than others, which stopped her cold. At the same moment, we fell into a deep trough, and rolled violently to port. It was like a slow-motion demolition derby.

I was listening to things tumbling about in the galley, when suddenly I hear a splintering SNAAAP-CRACKKK overhead and looked up in time to see the topmast fall forward, pulled down by the jib topsail, now partly in the water.

Velda came running up the ladder and took the wheel in hurried response to my started cry, trying to hold the bow into the weather, while Sylvia and I went forward to drag the sail out of the water. Almost immediately, we stopped and were rolling in the trough.

Some 12 feet of the topmast was dangling upside down, suspended from its splintered stub by electrical wires and bits of rigging. The boat rolled heavily, and with each roll, the broken mast swung out and back like a huge wooden flail, hammering the complex rigging at the crosstrees 35 feet above our heads. Bits of wood, broken blocks and other debris fell with each blow. I knew I had to go aloft..."

Good reading.

Grand Jury Connections

A Great Book!
I really appreciate this book, "Grand Jury Connections," because it is action-packed, interesting, has a good plot, and guides the readers through in a cohesive manner. These two writers did a marvelous job. Attorney Larry Moore has written other works that I am familiar with and knew when I heard he had co-written another book that I should "run right out and buy it." I'm truly glad I did. Walter Pruitt appears to grow up rather quickly while facing problems maturely and moving on with his young life. THIS IS A GOOD BOOK!

GRAND JURY CONNECTIONS IS WELL CONNECTED!
Grand Jury Connections is a mystery intertwined with remnants of the 60's. Walter, the main character, is a vibrant high school senior who is excited about graduation and his future. Unbeknownst to him, trouble is lurking. The characters in this mystery are well developed which makes for an excellent read. The authors, Bridget Vaughan and Larry Moore, are well versed and deserve much praise for their collaboration on their first mystery.

Brave Young Woman
So well written, I felt her experience. A must read for everyone who has experienced such crimes against them. Her positive attitude is truely inspiring!! Books have made me cry before, but this one made me cry for joy. I recommend this book to everyone!

WOW ~ Inspiring!!
A very well written book! How she dealt with horrific experiences, and how she overcame them with such a strong faith amazes me. A must read for everyone who has experienced such crimes against them. She has more than a positive attitude, She has an unwavering faith in God that has given her a life of joy inspite of the tragedies.

Great Adventures in Food : A Fresh Market Cookbook
Published in Paperback by Griffin Trade Paperback (June, 2001)
Authors: Ellen Haas and Bonnie Moore

Wise advise and good recipes
It was the authors section on grains that caught my attention as a vegetarian. Americans do not eat enough grains or know the wide variety of grains available. Oatmeal and cornmeal and some rices are about all that most people consume, unless they are from another country. Her advise that was common knowledge to our Moms and Grandmothers about how to handle food and store it safely is something families in 2001-2002 need to be reminded of. I also like her suggestions on how to grocery shop and to do the food shopping last before heading home. And keeping an ice chest in the car with cold packs in which to place items that need to stay cold.

this is the greatest!
I found this book to be one for all seasons. whatever the date...you find the food in the market and you can always find a wonderful recipe to go with it. in the spring and summer you find wonderful salads and soups that are refreshing, also lots of good seafood and other fish recipes. in the winter there are lots of good recipes to keep you feeling warm and cozy. also I found this is good for all age groups sp you can give it toa new bride as a gift orfor a young family or an experienced cook and there is something to appeal to each catagory. there are helpful tips everyone can use. and for an extra treat there are wonderful recipes from famous chefs which are simple enough for anyone to duplicate. I believe this book belongs in every kitchen to be used at will. signed...ethel weinberger

A Guide Book to the Natural Arches of the Moab Area (North)

an excellent guide to the arches south of arches nat'l park!
this (and its companion book for arches to the north) is an excellent guide to arches outside of arches national park. i will say, you really need not only a four-wheel drive vehicle to get to most of these arches but you need one with high clearance and a short wheelbase (i think that is the right way to say it). i have a toyota 4-runner and i wasn't really able to get to many of these either in or out of the park because my car was too long, and i probably needed knobbier tires. there are jeep rental places in moab--it would probably be a good idea to just rent one, as i will do next time, to get out to see these amazing works of nature. another thing to get is a really good map once you get there, because the ones reproduced are really difficult to read. in all other respects it is a great guide!

Healing from the Heart: The Inherent Power to Heal from Within (Book and 2 CDs)
Published in Hardcover by Moore Heart Enterprises (01 March, 2002)
Authors: Judith Moore and Marie Osmond
Average review score:

It's all in your head!
Have you ever had a doctor tell you that? Well, I have and I know others who have as well. Maybe wording was different, but content the same. I resented such doctors.

Through reading Dr. Moore's book however, I have discovered that those doctors may be closer to the truth than they realize. I have learned how connected the mind and the body are, and that stress and negative energy of our thoughts reflect in the energy of our bodies. The negative energy acts as poison that can weaken the body and cause many health problems that seem mysterious and untreatable to modern medicine.

Through inspiring stories and beautiful guided imagery, this book teaches how to recognize and release destructive, painful, negative emotions and thoughts and bring in peace and joy, ultimately leading to healing the mind and body both.

Unexpected wonderful results!
I was sceptical about reading this book because I didn't want to let go of the western medicine side of healing. I realized that I didn't have to let it go completely, just add to it with deeper, more emotional healing. By listening to the CD's, I was able to find some of the beliefs and emotions I had about myself that, I believe, were the root cause of my illness. It was so enjoyable to read the stories that I could not put it down and would recommend this book to anyone who thinks they are not quite as healthy as they could be or who don't know why they keep getting sick.
